Match report: Brentwood 1st XI 0 : Witham 1st XI 4

Witham went into this game with a weakened team and a poor run.  Brentwood though was looking strong having started the season unbeaten.  Witham had a significantly changed back line with Sam Taylor coming into the centre of defence and a welcome return for David Ranger at left back.  A position he held for Witham 1st XI some 15 years ago.

Witham started well once Richard Sheriff had managed to get his shirt on the right way round. In the early exchanges Witham had a few worrying moments in their make shift defence.  When on the ball though they looked dangerous and either side could have snatched the lead.  A strong right hand side for Witham saw the balance swing in their favour.  Paddy Priests, Tom Willfull and Paul Bellefewe combined a number of times, getting closer as they went.  The  breakthrough finally came from Witham and with ten minutes left in the first half a couple of good saves from the Brentwood keeper saw the ball fall to Josh Mallard who slotted home with a maturity few expected.  Bizarrely, Brentwood then played for time and managed to run out the clock in the first half without reply to Witham’s advantage.

The second half started the same with flowing hockey from both sides.  Brentwood pressed and Witham hit on the counter using the space behind the Brentwood ring to great effect.  A number of short corners later and still both teams failed to add to the tally.  It was a flowing counter attacking move that saw Witham double their lead.  Man of the match Jon Taylor finished sweetly in a move involving Sam Taylor and Mike Taylor.  Witham’s third came from the fluent Gavin Dixie, a rasping shot that offered the keeper little chance.  The fourth was icing on the cake and Jon Taylor slotted an acute angle after his first shot was saved.  Brentwood still pressed to break the Witham defence and for the first time this season they remained resolute, thanks in no small part to Arwyn Jones and Geoff Bedtiuk.
