04-Oct-08 Witham 4 v O L Academy 1 0-1
Witham 4ths  0   v   1 Old Loughts Academy
For the second week running Witham IV's conceded a late goal, this week against Old Lought's Academy, costing them a valuable point and sending them to their second defeat of the season. Old Lought's started the game strongly, their young and enthusiastic side playing some good attacking hockey. Only Ben Wenham at left midfield distinguished himself during a poor first half for Witham. Some tenacious, and at times desperate defending, and the goalkeeping of  Tim Pickop, who made several key saves, kept Witham in the game during the first half. Words of encouragement at half time from Capt. Richard Dunnage and Vic. Murphy breathed some life into the struggling Witham side, and the team then emerged for the second half keen to make a game of it. Within minutes Witham's midfield had kicked into gear creating several chances, and with Alex Piccolo, Richard Dunnage and Matt Watson driving the Witham front line it looked for a few minutes as though Witham may just seal their first victory. As the game wore on, Witham played some increasingly better hockey and began to press Old Lought's, searching for the winning goal. However, with only minutes remaining a Witham attack broke down and Lought's mounted a swift and successful counter attack, sliding the winning goal home and leaving little time for a Witham recovery.
11-Oct-08 Witham 4 v Plashet 2 15:30
Witham 4ths  2   v   3 Plashet 2nds
For the 3rd consecutive week, Witham 4's conceded late goals to cost them the game. But they came very close to winning a hard fought match against a strong Plashet side and capturing their first points of the season. Plashet, as expected, started the game very strongly and were soon putting pressure on Witham, but Witham's defence held out and aided by some excellent goalkeeping by James Suett they remained in the game until a swift breakaway move was finished off by Richard Dunnage, giving Witham an un-expected lead. Plashet continued to pressure the Witham side and the inevitable equaliser was soon to follow, levelling the score at 1-1.
Then it was then Witham's turn to score, taking the lead for the second time in the match, this time through Ben Wenham. For the next few minutes it looked as though Witham would take all of the points, and even when keeper James Suett was finally beaten Plashet's goal bound shot was cleared from the line and Witham held on 2-0. However, with Kevin Bellehewe pushing forward and Vic Murphy linking up well with Ben Wenham in midfield, and only minutes remaining, disaster struck. Witham had managed, yet again, to 'grab defeat from the jaws of victory' and finally succumbed to 2 quick Plashet goals, leaving the final score 2-3 to Plashet and the Witham team stunned and without reward for their efforts.
